Quick Tips for Wedding Planning

We have met with many excited couples planning their upcoming weddings and thought we'd share some helpful hints on Wedding Planning from a photographer's standpoint. We love our diverse clientele and have learned a lot from each consultation. Here are some quick tips to ensure you get the photographs you want on the day of your wedding, regardless of your style:

  • Meet with your photographer in person, if possible, months before your big day to solidify she is a good fit for you - only so much can be expressed over email/phone.
  • Create a "must have" photo list prior to your wedding, both with the types of photos you'd like and the people you want in those photos. Most likely your photographer will email you a questionnaire, however, it should be made very clear what you want. Some couples prefer to have a very specific list of shots they want. Don't be afraid to be as detailed as you like! If you have your grandmother's handkerchief and want a photo of your grandmother giving you the handkerchief in your wedding gown, then let your photographer know!
  • If you're camera shy, let the photographer know so they can work their magic and appear "incognito" during your wedding. The best candids are captured when couples feel comfortable and relaxed.
  • Ensure your photographer is organized and is not afraid to talk to the other venders at the wedding. Specifically, your photographer should be coordinating the wedding day details with the officiant and DJ.
  • Be sure to have a key "go to" person on your wedding day that the photographer can use as a resource for questions. This is often one of the bridesmaids, the wedding coordinator or a close relative.

Most importantly, it is your job as a couple to enjoy your day and leave the details up to those around you!  Delegate, delegate, delegate... and delegate some more!

How to Make the Most of Your Photo Session

We are often asked by our clients how they can make the most of their photo sessions, so this post is dedicated to a few helpful hints and tips to assist you through the process. If you have a question that we haven't answered in this post, please leave a comment and we will respond right away!

Perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle is making sure the photographer you choose is the best fit for you and your family. Do your homework and research the photographer online. Look through social media like Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram, as well as their website and blog. Ask for referrals from your family and friends, or even from the photographer who should be able to connect you with a happy customer or two! You should always feel comfortable contacting them to ask questions, as many questions as you have. Your photographer should be open to sharing information and make you feel comfortable. Some key questions to ask:
  • If I order the CD/Jump drive does it include "full" digital rights and, if so, how long does it usually take for me to receive it?  This is critical. Some photographers take up to 1 year to get the CD/Jump drive to their Wedding and Baby Package clients and once they receive it, it is copyright protected. We were quite shocked when we heard this and how common it can be in this industry.
  • Does the photographer's style match yours and is the photographer willing to accommodate your style?  Some photographers are not willing to change their personal style,  so be sure you truly love their work if you decide to use them.
  • Is the photographer you want within your budget?  It is important to feel confident with the financial decision while not jeopardizing the quality of photography you are receiving.
  • Don't be afraid to ask any question that you feel would be a "deal breaker" for you.
Planning can help both you and the photographer for your photo session. Here are some key recommendations:
  • Loose fitting, solid bright colored clothing always look great in photographs. Printed clothing can be okay too, however, ensure it does not overwhelm the photo and distract from the main subject - you! Make sure you feel comfortable and confident with what you are wearing... it translates into your facial expressions during the photo session.
  • Pin photos that you like on Pinterest and/or send the photographer some sample photos that you like. This way the photographer can get a sense of your style and will be sure to capture the image you're looking for.
  • Before your photo session the photographer should contact you to plan out any last minute details, like props and/or location specifics. If not, give them a call!
The very most important part of your photo session should be to have fun! It should be a pleasant experience, the photographer should be able to make you laugh and capture beautiful candid moments.

Cheers,
